``More Than Words on a Page``

is an LQ VIDEO PROJECT about the struggles of living with low literacy.
The series features testimonials of
adult literacy learners and volunteer literacy tutors.

About the Series:

In-depth and brief interviews provide an overview of how low literacy impacts the everyday lives of English-speaking adults in Quebec. These vignettes also provide a glimpse into how improving literacy skills increases self-esteem and the ability to function in today’s knowledge-based economy.

Making the series:

We opted to use small cameras for this production, despite the lower resolution. Smaller cameras were less expensive, enabled us to shoot more footage, and put our subjects at ease because the equipment was less intrusive.

All the footage was shot first; then we wrote the script. By asking open-ended questions, we enabled the learners and tutors to tell their stories. We then fashioned the video’s structure around what was revealed through the interviews.

By putting the subjects and their stories first, our hope is to provide a video that truly represents our learners and tutors.
